With advancements in rehabilitation and therapy treatment options, you don’t have to settle for a painful lifestyle. Physical therapy for Sun City low back pain may be your saving grace for a better life.

Physical therapy for low back pain offers a laser-focused, customized treatment plan to eliminate pain and restore mobility. A physical therapist will first pinpoint exactly what is causing your low back pain. He or she will study health history, what injuries may have lead to low back pain, take posture into consideration, and understand the chronic conditions associated with this particular type of pain.

Your PT will then design a comprehensive, individualized care plan that is guaranteed to significantly reduce pain if you commit, are communicative with your physical therapist, and maintain a good mental attitude (because beating the physical side of an injury is only half the battle!).

Injury

The most common cause of low back pain is caused by an injury. By twisting too hard one way or lifting something too heavy, for example, you can injure the muscles in your back and can eventually lead to long-term chronic pain if gone untreated. Pain is natural and healthy, as it is your body’s way of letting you know that something is wrong.

While you may feel like holding off from movement after an injury, remaining active is a sure-fire way to recover quicker. However, be sure this activity is done under the supervision of a professional physical therapist. Physical therapists are movement experts who understand the musculoskeletal system, certain diseases, and conditions that cause immobility and pain, and know the tricks of the trade to cure them naturally.

Posture

Many people have jobs that require them to sit at a desk most of the day, which naturally (because of how unnatural it is for our bodies to sit at a desk 7-9 hours a day) strains the body. If you don’t sit with proper posture, you may be more susceptible to experience back pain. This is especially true if you also do a lot of additional sitting outside of the office, such as driving and then even sitting around at home.

Mobility is the key to a healthy lifestyle. Make sure to get up and walk around to break up long periods of sitting and consider even utilizing a standing desk.

Chronic Conditions

Some chronic conditions, such as fibromyalgia, have low back pain as one of the common symptoms. Since they are chronic conditions, it is something you will have to deal with for the rest of your life. That’s why it’s important to make sure your symptoms are being treated appropriately and consistently. Just because you have to live with this chronic pain, doesn’t mean you can’t better control it.

4 At-Home Videos for Sun City Low Back Pain

1) Pelvic Tilt

This exercise is a great physical therapy stretch to promote an active range of motion and is in fact, the foundation of all the low back pain activities. The goal of this exercise is to stretch your back, not hold for stability. You’re going for a clean, smooth, controlled motion and you should not feel any pain. The pelvic tilt is a simple in and out motion of your back arch and can be done either sitting or laying down.

For a visual demonstration and a little more detail, check out this short and sweet video below by Desert Edge’s own Mike King on the pelvic tilt.

2) Hamstring Stretch

Now, this exercise is great for everyone. 9 times out of 10 when a patient comes in for a session, one symptom they have is tight hamstrings. This physical therapy stretch is crucial for stretching out that back but make sure to keep that back straight and head up for this low back pain-addressing stretch.

Also, keep in mind — If you’re not feeling it behind your thigh then you’re probably doing it wrong so focus on that posture and thigh tightening.

4) Stability of Building Exercise

This exercise is more progressed than in the previous 3 stretches and exercises. If you had a hard time with the others, maybe hold off on this one and check with your physical therapist or give us a call.

Make sure you start out on a firm surface and maintain a neutral position with your back. Start by raising one arm and the opposite leg then alternate from one side to the other. Focus on slow, controlled movements to keep that initial form and maintain your balance all the way through. In addition to helping your lower back, this exercise also targets the upper back and glutes.
