Call Us Now

Every one of us has experienced a pretty nasty headache at one point or another. Some people are actually more prone to headaches and could have multiple in a short span of time. Due to the stress that today’s world is bringing into people’s lives, headaches have become one of the most prevalent issues for humankind. Headaches affect almost half of the global population, and while some may be caused by underlying factors (chemical imbalance, hypertension, tumors, etc.), many of them are actually in direct correlation with musculoskeletal problems.

Contact Your Local Physical Therapist

If you suffer from chronic headaches (migraines), one method might be helpful for you – physical therapy. Contacting your physical therapist may just be a solution to all of those headaches. Physical therapy can address and solve many physical issues we face today. Desert Edge Physical Therapy’s number one priority is the patient. Contact the professionals at our office and let us create a customized care plan that will help ease your pain.

Common Types of Headaches

Cervicogenic Headache

This type of chronic headache usually originates from unresolved neck issues the patients might face. Cervicogenic headaches are often misdiagnosed so the problem will still occur and burden the life of a patient desperate for help. The pain from the neck tends to transfer to the head causing a person major pain.

Some of the symptoms of this type of headache include a reduced range of motion in the neck area; pain on both sides of the back of your head; nausea; sensitivity to light or sound; vertigo or dizziness; pain in a side of the face or cheek; pain on the side of your upper neck that radiates to your head. If you suspect you might be suffering from Cervicogenic headaches, contact your physician or consult with the physical therapists at Desert Edge Physical Therapy.

Tension Headache

Tension headaches present themselves as a deep and aching pain that often feels like tightness around the forehead or the sides and the back of the head. However, some may feel mild or moderate pain while others may feel pretty intense pain. This type of headache is commonly caused by stress. Stress is the root cause of most occurring headaches in today’s world. People are getting stressed on a daily basis and it’s no wonder the world is under a “headache epidemic”.

There are many stress factors that can cause tension headaches. Some of those include alcohol, dry eyes, fatigue, smoking, flu, caffeine, etc. Symptoms of a tension headache may include dull head pain; pressure around the forehead, and tenderness around the scalp and forehead. It is also necessary to mention that many of us confuse this type of headache for migraines.

What Can We Do To Relieve The Pain?

The first step to recovery is consulting with a physician or a physical therapist. For stress-related headaches, doctors often prescribe drugs that relieve the headache. While that may be a temporary solution, for a permanent one we would advise our readers and future clients to contact the physical therapists at Desert Edge PT. Physical therapy has long been known as the solution to many issues modern-day medicine cannot alleviate. Our experienced and knowledgeable team has many exercises that can help patients relieve headaches for good!

A Couple Of Do-At-Home Exercises

First, we have to cover some of the basic exercises our readers and clients can do at home or at their jobs:

Scapular Retractions – This is one of the easiest exercises a person can perform while sitting at a desk. This exercise helps the patient combat the issues we often notice that people working in the offices have.

Chin Tucks – Everyone who’s guilty of hunching over their desks needs to do this exercise. Chin tucks are awesome and easily doable exercises to help you align your head, neck, and shoulders.

Cat-Cow Stretching – A great exercise to improve back and neck mobility. Preferred to be done by the people who are sitting for long periods of time during the day.

Turning The Head Side To Side – If you feel stiff when turning your head, this exercise is perfect for you. It is made to improve the mobility of the neck.

Trapezius Stretching – With this exercise, you help loosen the top of your shoulders.

If you instead opt to come into our office, we offer a wide selection of treatments that can help tackle the ever-prevalent headaches. After we evaluate the patient and examine the body, we can set a treatment program up which will inevitably help the patient in the long run.

Some of the treatments that may help with pain include:

Whatever may be the case, we’ll try to alleviate your pain through natural treatments. The treatment will ultimately depend on the diagnosis. Get in touch with us so we can jump-start your road to recovery. Some headaches might actually be caused by both physical and stress-related circumstances. Some of these treatments will slowly but surely help get rid of the painful headaches (or migraines) and reduce how often they occur. The combination of hands-on treatments and do-at-home exercises can make a world of difference.

How Long Does The Therapy Usually Last?

Most therapy plans last for a few months but many patients continue therapy for years to help minimize or maintain a healthy body. Depending on the severity of the issue, your suggested treatment plan will vary. Although everyone is different, most of our patients usually feel some kind of relief after the first few days. Physical therapy helps bring long-term relief. If the treatment is not successful, we recommend going to your physician for additional scans.
