Benefits of Compression Therapy

Compression treatment with NormaTec is taken to a new level. The system employs pulsated, sequential pneumatic compression supplied by leg boots that look resemble a blood pressure cuff and have five chambers connected to a control device and pump. These leg boots apply sequential and pulsing compression to a specific region, improving blood flow and lymphatic fluid drainage over time.

The primary function of these compression sleeves is to activate a lymphatic flush, which helps to eliminate waste materials, irritation, and edema while promoting healthy blood flow back into the area. Furthermore, research shows that the circulation in the legs is improved by wearing these boots.

Who can Benefit from Compression Therapy?

Runners, swimmers, cyclists, triathletes, weightlifters, CrossFitters, Mudders, Walkers, Football, Basketball, Baseball, Soccer, Volleyball, Hockey, LAX players, to name a few, are patrons who can benefit from compression therapy.

Second, anyone who spends most of their day on their feet will find benefits in utilizing the NormaTec device. When your occupation requires you to stand all day, such as nurses, doctors, chiropractors, construction workers, wedding photographers/videographers, and others, gravity promotes poor circulation in your legs.

Anyone suffering from poor circulation, such as patients with Diabetes, Varicose veins, Peripheral Artery Condition, and just about any circulation disease except Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), would benefit.

Last but not least, anybody who likes a soothing massage! NormaTec compression therapy feels like a light, soothing massage! Imagine reclining back and relaxing for 10-60 minutes with a post-workout recovery beverage, getting your legs massaged, lactic acid flushed, and re-energized for the day! To believe it, we suppose you simply have to try it. Desert Edge PT is the only Physical Therapy clinic in all of Greater Phoenix that offers NormaTec Compression Therapy. System of Advanced Recovery

The NormaTec Leg is composed of high-quality materials, has overlapping zones for gapless compression, and custom-molds each time it is used. The system uses proprietary NormaTec PULSE technology, which massages the whole length of your legs with air compression to stimulate blood flow, keep fluid flowing, and speed up the healing process. Each section of the Normatec Leg will compress, pulse, and release, similar to kneading and stroking during a massage. As the compression pattern progresses up your leg, this will be repeated for each section. The compressor may also be customized to meet your demands. Control the length of your session and the amount of time it lasts.

What is compression treatment, and how does it work?

Compression therapy, like cryotherapy, has been used as a medical treatment for decades. In fact, NormaTec, one of the most well-known compression therapy brands, began as a medical equipment firm dedicated to the treatment of lymphedema (chronic swelling).

The company’s current focus is sports rehabilitation, although its roots are in blood flow science: Every cell in your body receives oxygen, nutrients, and hormones through your circulatory system. This complicated circuit eliminates metabolic wastes like carbon dioxide and lactic acid at the same time, efficiently cleansing your system of toxins.

Compression treatment works by boosting blood flow to particular portions of the body, encouraging your body to supply more oxygen and nutrients to those areas, allowing you to recover faster, feel better, and perform better.

Trying Compression Therapy? Here’s What You Need to Know.

Wear compression clothing.

Knee sleeves, compression tights, and elbow sleeves have a lot of anecdotal evidence to back them up. Wearing compression clothing during or after exercise appears to boost physical performance and accelerate recovery for some people, but the evidence isn’t conclusive.

Compression garments have been the subject of conflicting research, and it’s unclear whether you should wear them during or after exercise, or which forms of activity they benefit from. We always encourage patients to ask their Physical Therapist what is best for their personal recovery journey.

What is the Duration of a Compression Therapy Session?

The duration of a compression treatment session might range from 15 to 30 minutes. We propose 30-minute sessions if you have the time and want to get the most out of the session. If you’re short on time and only have 15 to 20 minutes, you should still be able to reap some significant benefits.

Is Compression Therapy a Pleasant Experience?

Absolutely. Compression treatment is quite pleasant for the majority of individuals. While compression therapy does provide pressure to the treated region, most individuals find the treatment to be quite soothing and enjoyable. As always, talk with your Physical Therapist if you notice significant pain while receiving the therapy.

Benefits of Compression Therapy

Athletes from various sports have started donning puffy, intergalactic-looking contraptions to benefit from compression treatment. Athletes have used compression garments during and after exercise long before these suits were invented (and still do).

Compression treatment, as you can see, is quite beneficial for a variety of conditions and for people from many walks of life. Depending on your recovery journey, compression therapy may be advised by your PT. The Physical Therapists at Desert Edge PT are certified and licensed to create specific recovery plans for patients, which may include the utilization of the NormaTec device.

Veins Appearance Is Reduced

Patients who use compression therapy on a daily basis can substantially minimize the appearance of visible veins, according to researchers. Compression relieves the built-up pressure in the veins, allowing blood to flow more freely. These veins develop as pressure develops in the veins, causing them to twist and become engorged.

Aids in the Prevention and Reduction of Cellulite Appearance

Many ladies suffer from cellulite. While we know that exercise and a healthy diet can significantly reduce cellulite, many women still suffer from cellulite no matter what they do. Research shows that blood circulation can play a factor in increased cellulite. Compression treatment has been demonstrated in a few recent trials to successfully decrease and prevent the appearance of cellulite.

Relieves Pain

Pain is frequently relieved by compression. Blood is forced back towards your heart when clothes or technologies compress the muscles. This reduces pain while also making your muscles feel lighter.

Warms the Muscles and Improves Flexibility

Compression helps athletes keep their muscles warm by keeping them warm. When your muscles are heated, take a deep breath and exhale slowly.

Faster Recovery Time

Blood flows quicker through your system when veins are compressed. Lactic acids and other wastes that accumulate in the tissue are transported through the veins and returned to the heart. Compression aids in the more effective drainage of metabolic wastes, which aids in the healing process. This is true for both healing from a strenuous workout and recovering from a variety of operations.

More Oxygen to Your Muscles

Compression has been shown in medical tests to enhance the quantity of oxygen in muscles. Oxygen provides nourishment for your muscles and aids in the healing of any pain caused by exercise.

Increases Your Body’s Awareness

People who use compression treatments report feeling more in touch with their bodies, according to research. Compression treatments stimulate the receptors that communicate with your brain and inform you where your legs, arms, hands, and feet are and what they’re doing by applying pressure to the skin.

Overall, the evidence supporting these claims is mixed, however, NormaTec does provide an amazing array of research papers examining this product’s technique. It’s difficult to put all types of compression treatment into one category now that new items are surfacing each year.

Wearing a knee sleeve, for example, will not achieve the same effects as NormaTec’s “pulsing, distal release, gradient” technique. Because the knee sleeve squeezes your leg above and below the knee, blood and fluid are forced away. When you remove the knee sleeve, blood rushes back to the region, causing the advantages to be induced.

A NormaTec suit, on the other hand, squeezes your legs at different times and in different sections, beginning at your feet and inflating occasionally to simulate normal blood flow.

So, similar to percussion treatment vs foam rolling, both forms of compression therapy can provide advantages, but on different levels.

Benefits of Compression Therapy

Desert Edge Physical Therapy is pleased to announce that NormaTec technology has been added to our office. As we expand our facilities, we want to make sure that we’re always introducing new technology, learning new therapeutic methods, and providing our patients the best chance to heal from injury in the most efficient and natural way possible. It’s critical to consult with a specialist to discuss your specific requirements. Not all compression garments or treatments are created equal. If you wear a compression garment that is too loose or too tight, or if you use a garment instead of compression technology that would better suit your needs, you may miss out on the health advantages. Contact Desert Edge Physical Therapy today to schedule your consultation and see how compression therapy can benefit you!
